UHLS Big Read

What if everybody in Albany and Rensselaer Counties read the same book?

The East Greenbush Community Library is participating in The Big Read, a project sponsored by the Upper Hudson Library System through a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The book chosen for the project is Their Eyes Were Watching God by Nora Zeale Hurston. The novel narrates Janie Crawford's ripening from a vibrant but voiceless teenage girl into a woman with her finger on her own destiny. The novel breathes and bleeds a whole life's worth of urgent experience.

The Big Read is designed to address the decline in literary reading by inviting entire communities to come together to discover the transformative power of literature. Around the two-county area a number of libraries will be hosting book discussion groups, musical events, movies and other artistic events centering on the book's theme, setting and era.

At our library, the movie version of Their Eyes Were Watching God, starring Halle Berry, will be shown on Wednesday, May 9th at 6:30 pm. The next evening, on Thursday, May 10th at 7 pm, the fabulous jazz group Sonny & Perley will perform music of the era. On Monday, May 21st, our Adult Morning Book Group will discuss the book at 10 am.

The library will have a display highlighting The Big Read project with a limited number of free copies of the book for the public.
